See what others are saying about Counterpoint!| Blogosphere: A need for counterpoint | | The counterpoint to emotional, narrow, partisan, and temporally momentary exhortations is: rational, fundamental, universal, and designed temporally to be intellectual considerations for all seasons. The counterpoint I suggest is that of criticism as defined by Matthew Arnold 1828-1888: Arnold says “I am bound by my own definition of criticism: a disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in the world.”It appears that most people consider the Internet not to be a congenial media for rational discourse. I think that such need not be the case. I suggest that we, who find the Internet discussion forum to be a useful venue for all kinds of discourse, attempt to test that Internet forum for use as a means to perform the type of criticism Arnold defines.Arnold’s form of criticism is designed to serve, not an immediate need for society enhancement but to serve, as an instrument for laying a concrete foundation for all seasons. The results of this form of criticism depend upon the critiquing agent becoming a grounding source for the best knowledge available. Arnold does not mean the best information available but he means the best...
| | Is it a Scam? Sites to avoid ripoffs... | | I just posted the following information on someone else's discussion. Then I decided that I wanted feedback on what you all think about these sites, and also other techniques you use to avoid being scammed. What do you think about these sites? Have you been saved from scams like I have because of them? Have you ever used them to report a scam? What else do you use?Better Business Bureau
http://bbb.org/Search for the company or their URL. If they have a record, check it out. If there are unresolved complaints, run hard away from the scam or horrible company. If they have no record, and have been in business for a long time (and you are sure that they have been), then no record is a good thing, for it means no complaints. If they are new and have no complaints, it is neither good or bad, but means that there is not enough information to tell (so I would stay away from them too). If a company is listed as a BBB member in good standing, then that is awesome.Rip Off Report
http://ripoffreport.com/Here you can search for companies as well. People write complaints. But then. the company, its employees, and other customers are able to second the claim or write a rebuttal...
| | Cat emergency | | Last night one of my cats, the 13 year old Jet, came back in covered on dirty motor oil. I have no idea how this happened, but I think that someone must have left an open container of waste sump oil out, which she's then knocked over, because she is quite covered in it like she had been swimming in the oil. All of her legs, lower body and tail were heavily oiled and last night I started to wash her at first in the bath, which is now covered in oil as well, then in the kitchen sink. I've just used ordinary washing up detergent which might not be ideal, but which is what I had to hand at the time. I was up until well past midnight last night and managed to get a lot of the oil off her but by no means all of it. After washing her twice, I decided that was enough trauma for one night, so I shut her downstairs to stop her from getting oil on the other cats, (she'd already got oil all over my bedding so I had to change that last night as well). I was up again this morning very early (4.30) to see how she was, and then I gave her another wash in the kitchen sink. She's now a lot cleaner that she was, but she still has got a lot of the oil on her fur.I'll give her another wash... | |

| | Christianity's views of Mary, Ever Virgin. | | While I would not give Mary status as a Goddess, she was certainly chosen by God for a very special role. In the church, Mary seemed to fill a need by some pagans whom the church assimilated to pray to a feminine personage. They were very careful not to call her a deity of any kind, as befits the mythology. In ancient mythology, the male deities often went about choosing women to beget mortal heroes by. You still hear about Hercules and not about his mother. There are many claims made about the Virgin Mary, and she is given the same honor as any other mortal in the Church. She is called a Saint. However, in comparison with the other Saints, she is venerated with prayers more often than any, I think. In that way, I suppose, we could say that Mary stands above the other saints. Even Moses and the Archangel, Michael, are not addressed in prayers as commonly as the Virgin Mary. The bible seems to cover a lot of material on adultery and unfaithfulness. The Virgin Mary seems to be the incarnation and epitome of purity and trustworthiness – a decided counterpoint. I believe there is something very iconic and powerful in that. A perfect woman. (This seems unrealistic, but we are... | |
| | CAN BLOOD TYPE determine character? | | Can blood type determine character? If you're a recent arrival to Japan, don't worry if a new friend asks "What's your blood type?" Your inquisitor is unlikely to be a vampire. Here, blood type is believed to tell a lot about a person in just a letter or two: A, B, O or AB.Blood type is thought to lend insight into character and compatibility, which is why it often comes up at group nomikai (as a lively discussion over drinks) and, of course, among the romantically minded (as a sort of litmus test). But the blood type mythology has created more than just talk. Fortunetellers often base a reading on a person's astrological sign as well as blood group. Every morning on the news, sometime around the weather report, the day is graded according to luck for each blood type. One Saitama housing company, Saisan Misawa Homes Co. Ltd., requires sales staff to wear badges indicating their name, hometown, hobbies and blood type to put customers at ease. Some kindergartens group children according to blood type and educate them "accordingly," while some companies base work assignments on blood stereotypes.Based on studies from ancient Greece to Carl Jung, Furukawa assigned... | |
| | My Television Says You're All Perverts! by Bessie Pinatabottom | | Greetings with love and kisses! I am Bessie Pinatabottom, and it has come to my attention via such daring new shows that really stand out as original and fun and new are such crime dramas portraying the grave reality of the computer internetwork or "Online" as young people call it! It seems that this "internet" thing is a tool used for adult men to solicit illicit sexual interactions with young children, boys and girls! At first I did not take heed of what my television crime drama CSI Law and Order shows were telling me, but then I noticed that the messages made up every single plotline for every episode for the past three seasons! And if these ideas were not true then they would not be portrayed on the television screen, at least not without counterpoint proof which outnumbers the evidence. Therefore we have no reason to believe, ladies, that rogue men are not out there right now trying to satisfy their sinful urges on our children! As we all know, sex is evil and unnatural, and as we now know now, the entire internet is made up of these perverts! It says so on television, and it says so A LOT. This is a big deal for us! We must pray and disconnect everything electronic... | |
| | Baroque Style | | In the arts, Baroque is both a period and the style that dominated it. The Baroque style used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, oil painting, literature, and music. The style started around 1600 in Rome, Italy and spread to most of Europe. In music, the Baroque applies to the final period of dominance of imitative counterpoint, where different voices and instruments echo each other but at different pitches, sometimes inverting the echo, and even reversing thematic material.
The popularity and success of the "Baroque" was encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church which had decided at the time of the Council of Trent that the arts should communicate religious themes in direct and emotional involvement. The aristocracy also saw the dramatic style of Baroque architecture and art as a means of impressing visitors and expressing triumphant power and control. Baroque palaces are built around an entrance sequence of courts, anterooms, grand staircases, and reception rooms of sequentially increasing magnificence. In similar profusions of detail, art, music, architecture, and literature inspired each...
